What is achievement?
My personal definition would be:
When you are able to complete a sought-after objective.
How about the Merriam Webster dictionary’s definition?
2a: a result gained by effort : ACCOMPLISHMENT
b: a great or heroic deed
I chose the second sense because the 1st one wasn’t so helpful.
What is orientation towards achievement?
Goal orientation, or achievement orientation, is an “individual disposition towards developing or validating one’s ability in achievement settings”.
It’s a disposition, in a sense that, that is where the individual’s focus and attention is allocated to. In a sense it’s what Tony Robbins called, mastering the science of achievement.
Rather, what is N-Ach?
Need for achievement is an individual’s desire for significant accomplishment, mastering of skills, control, or high standards.
Well that’s what it says on Wikipedia, proponents of which are David McLlelland and Henry Murray.
Peter Drucker wrote until his nineties, being inspired by Verdi, who wrote Falstaff at 80, saying “All my life as a musician, I have striven for perfection.”
Stephen Covey defines happiness as “the fruit of the desire and ability to sacrifice what we want now for what we want eventually”.
Dr. Charles Garfield, watched astronauts rehearse everything on earth, again and again in a simulated environment before they went to space.
All three seem to share a common theme, mastery and performance.
Last but not least, I’ve been getting into visualization as a technique to enhance performance and success, so here’s a video with Michael Phelps on how he visualizes as preparation for the moment. It’s also paired along with progressive relaxation.
The best quote from that I think is that: Michael has swam the race hundreds of times before he actually does it.
I’m not fond of crushing my opponents. I realize this as I played with my friend Kim in basketball today. In a series of 2–1.
Winning appears to really be a mental game.
You have to mentally choose the right decisions, for example, not being prideful, and taking the safe choice. This is why it’s called “margin of safety” in investing. You shouldn’t waste possession moments, because that’s all you have.
It also seems to me, that such as focusing on the basketball and not on the players in game — — so is focusing on achievements, and focusing on the steps, the mini-steps towards achievement.
